December 16, 2020 0 Comments

COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY!

We do communicate on daily basis, that's one of a reason why we have to do effective communication, because a good communication will lead to several benefit to you.

So, the question is : Do you want to communicate better?

Here's tips that will help you avoid misunderstandings, grasp the real meaning of what’s being communicated, and greatly improve your communication skills.

📣 THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION 📣

Why is communication important to human life?

Communication is foundation of all human relationships. Communication is process of sending and receiving information. Human communicate not only by face-to-face communication, but also by giving information via internet, social media, call, printed product such as books and newspapers. Many people believe that the significance of communication  is like the importance of breathing.

Moreover, here's several reason why communication plays vital role in human life :

1. Communication helps to spread knowledge and information among people

2. Communication helps people to express human's feelings and ideas
(at same time, helps to understand emotion and thoughts of the other)

3. Helps people to develop relationships with others.

📣 A FAILURE TO COMMUNICATE

What happen when communication fails?

Here are six things that can arise from a lack of communication.

1. Misunderstandings

Misunderstandings happen all the time — especially when communication is not clear. And misunderstandings out of a lack of communication can lead to some serious issues because information is not conveyed properly.

2. Missed opportunities

A lack of communication can often lead to missed opportunities, especially at work. This can happen because an employee does not clearly communicate their interest in an opening for a promotion, for example, or because they don't effectively communicate their interest and/or willingness to take on more responsibilities. As such, they may be passed up for the promotion.

3. Unnecessary conflict

Unnecessary conflict can certainly arise from a lack of communication. Due to the delivery and reception of information that is not good, as a result, other people receive incorrect information.

4. The "grapevine" effect

A lack of communication can lead to the "grapevine" effect, also known as the "telephone game." If one person miscommunicates information, that information can easily be passed along throughout the society. Of course, the dissemination of misinformation can lead to gossips, disarray, panic and overall disaster.

5. Mistrust

A lack of communication can lead to mistrust in a whole array of situations. If someone deliver a wrong information because of lack of communication, that people maybe got mistrust and disrespect from other people.

6. A broken human relationship

A lack of communication can ultimately lead to broken human relationship. Because ineffective communication can create misunderstandings, missed opportunities, conflict, the dissemination of misinformation and mistrust.

📣 CAUSE OF INEFFECTIVE OR BAD COMMUNICATION 📣

What’s stopping you
from communicating effectively?

Common barriers to effective communication include:

Stress and out-of-control emotion. When you’re stressed or emotionally overwhelmed, you’re more likely to misread other people, send confusing or off-putting nonverbal signals, and lapse into unhealthy knee-jerk patterns of behavior. To avoid conflict and misunderstandings, you can learn how to quickly calm down before continuing a conversation.

Lack of focus. You can’t communicate effectively when you’re multitasking. If you’re checking your phone, planning what you’re going to say next, or daydreaming, you’re almost certain to miss nonverbal cues in the conversation. To communicate effectively, you need to avoid distractions and stay focused.

Inconsistent body language. Nonverbal communication should reinforce what is being said, not contradict it. If you say one thing, but your body language says something else, your listener will likely feel that you’re being dishonest. For example, you can’t say “yes” while shaking your head no.

Negative body language. If you disagree with or dislike what’s being said, you might use negative body language to rebuff the other person’s message, such as crossing your arms, avoiding eye contact, or tapping your feet. You don’t have to agree with, or even like what’s being said, but to communicate effectively and not put the other person on the defensive, it’s important to avoid sending negative signals.

📣 HOW TO BECOME A GOOD COMMUNICATOR 📣

1. Become an engaged listener by focus fully on the speaker.

2. Pay attention to nonverbal signals
(Improve how you read & deliver nonverbal communication)

3. Deliver your words clearly

4. Use body language (avoid negative body language)

5. Avoid interrupting

6. Communicate effectively by staying calm under pressure

 ● Jaipong Dance (Traditional Dance)

Jaipongan dance is very well known in Indonesia. It seems almost impossible if there are Indonesian people who do not know jaipongan dance. Yes, jaipong dance is often displayed in various artistic performances. Not only that, the dance is also often performed in dangdut events so it is often known as the jaipong shake. Almost all dangdut artists always demonstrate the jaipong movement on stage.

But do you know who actually created the dance? He is the maestro, Gugum Gumbira Tirasondjaja. Born in Bandung, West Java on April 4, 1945.

He is known as a Sundanese composer, orchestra leader, choreographer, and businessman. As a choreographer, Gugum has a lot of dance references. Currently Gugum also teaches dance at STSI Bandung.

“Jaipongan dance is rooted in tradition not modernization. Dance, from the beginning until now is very dynamic, to the dance I do not say that the dance is not jaipongan but I say that it is a form of creativity,” he said.

As reported by disparbud.jabarprov.go.id, Wednesday (12/4/2017) Gugum adapted various dance movements which were then combined with the martial arts movements. It aims to give the image that women who are beautiful, flexible, and attractive, are able to defend themselves through martial arts movements.

Jaipongan made its debut in 1974. At that time, Gugum and his first gamelan and dancer appeared in public. The government then immediately tried to suppress this dance, because it was considered immoral. That is because this dance is called Tap Tilu development which shows the female sensuality.

However, Jaipongan survived the ban after the Indonesian government banned foreign pop music for several years. Jaipong then and went crazy in the 1980s.

Around the decade of 80 to 90s, Gugum created other dances such as Toka-toka, Setra Sari, Sonteng, Pencug, and others. The dances are the development of Jaipong dance. Jaipongan, the first work of Gugum, which began to be known to the public, was the dance “Daun Pulus Keser Bojong” and “Rendeng Bojong”. Both are types of princess dance and pair dance (male and female). From the dance, there are names of reliable Jaipongan dancers such as Tati Saleh, Yeti Mamat, Eli Somali, and Pepen Dedi Kurniadi.

● Ballet Dance (Modern Dance)

Ballet developed under the aristocratic influence as a formalized form of dance. A formal dance technique is combined with costumes, scenery, and music, as other forms of artistic elements. Ballet integrated dance, music, stage design and poetry to make a dramatic storyline. At first its roll was a virtually component of the opera.

Its origins date back to 15th and 16th centuries and started as entertainment form for aristocrats. Ballet began in the Italian Renaissance courts and spread from Italy to France by Catherine de’ Medici. Later it developed into a concert dance form in France and Russia. King Louis XIV founded the Académie Royale de Musique from which the Paris Opera Ballet developed as the first professional ballet company. In Russia, the ballet started its modern era.

Ballet depended on aristocratic money which had an influence on the music, literature and the ideas and development of ballet. In time ballet became less dependent on royal courts.

In a time there were founded the most popular ballet stages like Royal Danish Ballet, Imperial Ballet of the Russian Empire, The Royal Ballet in London, the San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, The Australian Ballet, The New York City Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada etc.

In Renaissance time in Italy ballet was the type of entertainment on aristocratic weddings. Court dancers and musicians collaborated to entertain aristocrats on celebrations. One of the first ballet dancing masters was Domenico da Piacenza. The first ballet was Ballet de Polonaise performed in 1573. Traditional shoes were not yet used, and the costumes were formal gowns.

In Renaissance time in France ballet was more formalized by Pierre Beauchamp. He codified five positions of the feet and arms. Famous ballet dancer and choreographer Jean-Baptiste Lully often cast the King Louis XIV in his ballets. Lully collaborated with Moliére, the French playwright, and the comédie-ballet was created. Lully also created the tragédie en musique genre.

Ballet spread throughout the Europe in Germany, Spain, Poland and Portugal in courts. In Poland King Wladyslaw IV Vasa promoted this dance. Ballet dancers organized into professional ballet troupes and performed for aristocrats as they toured through the Europe.

In the 18th century in France ballet d’action developed. The movements of the dancers were designed to express the story telling and characters. That is how ballet became an essential part of the opera dramatisation. It was included in operas as interludes called divertissements. A big role in this development played French dancer and balletmaster Jean-Georges Noverre and composer Christoph Gluck. Dance, music and scenery were brought together to support the plot. Three formal techniques developed: sérieux, demi-caractère, and comique.

Venice was also a centre of dance. Dancers travelled there for cultural exchange. In Hungary professional ballet troupes performed throughout the country.

In the 19th century, female ballet dancers were more popular. Ballerinas played male roles in the story. Viena became an important center for teaching ballet. Ballet moved away from the just aristocratic audience. Some famous ballerinas experimented with a new formal element of a ballet called pointe technique. In that way, ballerina got the ideal stage figure. Boxed toe ballet shoes were developed and stayed as formal part of ballet code.

In romantic movement ballet choreography became free, light, airy, and ballerinas appeared as fragile beings who could be lifted effortlessly creating the feeling of floating in the air.

At one point folklore became a part of ballet dancing, so folk-style dancing developed.

National ballets were established like National Opera of Ukraine, Hungarian National Ballet, National Theatre Ballet of Prague and Vienna State Ballet.

Russian ballet is thought as traditional ballet and had great importance in the history of ballet. Colonialism had an influence on stories with oriental, Asian and African elements. It also developed in Denmark.

A stiff short skirt worn as a costume, called tutu, became the formal element of ballet. Tutu skirt is supported by crinoline to enable the acrobatic legwork.

In the 20th century, Russian ballet was brought back to Paris because of the exile after the Revolution. In Russia, there was a stagnation on ballet scene. The ideological pressure made socialist pieces. However, there were stunning virtuosity, technical perfection, and strength.

Fokine went to the USA. He was not satisfied with just athletic display and prettiness of ballet. He demanded from ballerinas' expression and research of the history of the story, and use of authentic period costume.

In America ballet was adapted to new media, like television and movies. The theme was rather dramatized than a plot. There was more freethinking than a traditional narrative. Traditional tutu was changed by bias cut to give dancer more freedom of movement.

Neoclassical ballet developed a style between classical and contemporary ballet. Ballet returned to a more simplistic style, against overly dramatized style. The large sets and props were removed allowing the dancers to become the main artistic medium.

Contemporary ballet mixed elements of classical ballet and modern dance. It is not strictly traditional. It has use of pointe technique, as well as floor work and turn-in of the legs. A great influence on this genre had Mikhail Baryshnikov, director of American Ballet Theatre in 1980.

● Comment

Traditional and modern dance is two kinds of dance. A traditional dance is a dance developed by people that reflect the life of the people of a certain country or region. Dance in Indonesia (Indonesian: Tarian Indonesia) reflects the country's diversity of ethnicities and cultures. There are more than 300 ethnic groups in Indonesia: Austronesian roots and Melanesian tribal forms are visible, and influences ranging from neighboring Asian and even western styles through colonization. Each ethnic group has its own dances: there are more than 3,000 original dance forms in Indonesia, one of them is Jaipongan Dance. Jaipongan, also known as Jaipong, is a popular traditional dance of Sundanese people, West Java, Indonesia. Nowadays, Jaipong dance is not only performed locally but also internationally, in order to introduce Indonesian culture to the world.

Modern dance is a dance form that developed in the early twentieth century, partly in reaction to the traditional, more highly technical forms of dance. The term modern dance is usually typified by the theatrical dance which rose to prominence during the middle of the twentieth century, and was often highlighted in both Hollywood screen and Broadway stage productions. While strongly influenced by classical ballet, the movement of modern dance is more fluid and contains dynamic highlights and tricks of jazz dance, including isolations, kicks, and leaps; alternately, many movements are weighted and close to the earth. In my opinion, traditional and modern dance has its uniqueness and characteristic.

Indonesian Children's Game

October 30, 2020 0 Comments

Childhood is a very exciting time.  All we do when we are kids are learn and play.  However, when playing, children often argue over who will play the game first.  When children experience that, they usually play the "suit" game in Indonesia or known in other countries as the paper rock scissors game.  The game is very helpful in determining who the group or person will play first in a game.  Sometimes the game of "suit" is just played for entertainment.

Semut, Orang, Gajah

This game is popular throughout Asia, just as it is throughout the world in all its variations. I remember playing a paper, scissors, stone game of similar design. In Indonesia the game is also known as "suit" "suwitan" or "pingsut" and it played by young children to see who goes first in play, or just for fun to see who wins.

Hand signs:

semut - ant

Little finger points towards partner

Semut
orang - person

Pointer finger points towards partner

Orang
gajah - elephant

Thumb points towards partner

Gajah

How to Play:

Face your partner with your hand in front of you in a fist. Then, count to three together, open you hand and make one of the three hand signs. If both of you make the same sign, start again.

The Winner:

The semut wins over the gajah because the semut can crawl in the gajah's ear and tickle him to drive him crazy.

The orang wins over the semut because the orang can stomp on the semut and squash it.

The gajah wins over the orang because the orang can get trampled by the gajah.

It's so fun! What do you think?
